Total Number of Doors

Total number of doors in an abode should be in even numbers i.e. 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 etc. Doors in 10 (ten) numbers is not good as it ends with zero, but may not very seriously affect the inmates but anyhow it is advisable to avoid that number. Likewise, the total number of windows should be in even numbers. 

All the openings should be larger in size and more in numbers in north and east and smaller in size and lesser in numbers on south and west sides.

Main Door

Main entrance door should be best in the East or North side. It may be the centre but should be in the favourable position. Main door from the South is not good at all. A tree, a pole, a pillar, a wall, a junction, a water channel, a corner, a temple which are known as dwar vedha being right in front of the door are avoided at any cost. However, if the distance of twice the height is left from the door to the vedha object, there is no vedha.

Entrance Door as per Astrological Favourable Position

It is advisable to fix the main door by selecting the favorable position as per vastu. Selection following the sign (rashi) or constellation of the owner of the building is not recommended, as the structure may remain even after the death of a particular person and other may continue to live in that place.

Good Positions:

1.       North - North-East                                  Ensures Financial gains

2.       East - North-East                                   Endows with Enlightenment.

3.       South - South-East                                Ensures improvement

4.       West - North-West                                 Ensures Success.

Bad Positions:

1.       North - North-West                                 Instability

2.       East - South-East                                  Adverse effect.

3.       South - South-West                              Financial constraints and ill health of women.

4.       West - South-West                                Financial loss degradation of men.

General Rules

1.       The height of doors should be twice or more of their width, in general.

2.       Doors should be study and made of good wood.

3.       Various metals can be used to strengthen the main doors by steel and to decorate by brass.

4.       Doors can have a maximum of five frames (shalakhas)

5.       Main doors are best placed in the fourth grid from your right (out of nine grids) on each side as you see the building from outside.

6.       Avoid doors in the middle.

7.       Mahadwara should be biggest, strongest and most decorated.

8.       Main door with two shutter is recommended

Window alongside the Main Door

A window is recommended alongside the main door to enable the inmates to have a clear view of incoming strangers.

Similarly, adequate windows should be provided to allow enough light and circulation of air, preferably, more on the east and north sides.

Windows must be avoided falling behind the proposed fire-place in the kitchen, and behind the head-board of the bed in the bedrooms.

Windows in the toilets must be designed to ensure privacy.
