Astro-study : Kala Sarpa Dosha or Yoga

Kala Sarpa Yoga in Jyotish is known to give negative impact to the natives, in whose horoscopes, the nodes Rahu & Ketu encircle all the planets on either side.  If the Rahu is preceded by all the planets, it is worse than those on the other side of the zodiac.  It is opined that Rahu devours the planets on its path which is always moving in retrograde motion (backward) and Ketu is always 180 degrees away from Rahu.

I may stress the point that in the present modern day context, these so called adverse yogas may be converted to give desired results, in particular, to promote one going abroad for one reason or the other or even to settle down there. Perseverance and consistency in approach with the right attitude can make all the difference, though under guidance.

There are twelve types of Kala Sarpa Yoga, based upon the position of Rahu-Ketu axis in the horoscope.

1.       Ananta Kalasarpa is formed when Rahu is posited in the Ascendent i.e. Lagna. This yoga causes at ill effect on physical and mental plane with the resultant effect on education as well. The personality is erratic in disposition.
2.       Kulika Kalasarpa is formed when Rahu is posited in 2nd house. This indicates economic and financial dependence and hardship.  Enemies and diseases are active for the native.
3.       Vasuki Kalasarpa is formed when Rahu is posited in the 3rd house. The native lacks friends and faces setbacks in education and career.
4.       Shanka Kalasarpa is formed when Rahu is posited in the 4th house. Poverty, diseases and setbacks hound the native.
5.       Padma Kalasarpa is posited when Rahu is posited in the 5th house: Difficulties in gaining wealth and begetting children is experienced.  He may succeed in media, however.
6.       Maha Padma Kalasarpa is formed when Rahu is posited in the 6th hosue. Diseases & accidents will frequent the native and force early withdrawal from active life.
7.       Takshaka  Kalasarpa is formed when Rahu is posited in the 7th house.  If at all, the marriage takes place at a very late age.  Despondency in career and business may be experienced.
8.       Karkotaka Kalasarpa is formed when Rahu is posited in the 8th house. Marital discord and corruption cases may hound the native.
9.       Shankachura Kalasarpa is formed when Rahu is posited in the 9th house. Out-of-caste marriage is likely. Prosperity may be experienced only on separation from siblings.
10.   Pataka Kalasarpa is formed when Rahu is posited in the 10th house. Invites enmity due to lashing tongue and extreme language. Leads to financial and property losses.
11.   Vishadhar Kalasarpa is formed when Rahu is posited in the 11th house.  Native suffers due to his own vices causing ruin.  Bears no children.
12.   Sesha Naga Kalasarpa is formed when Rahu is posited in 12th hosue.  Expenditures balances income.  Not too bad, however.

Remedial measures may be applied under advice of an able astrologer.  Prayer or puja, reciting right mantra, wearing of related gem, installing appropriate yantra or pradosha fasting or abhishek can not only alleviate the sufferings of the native, but raise the native to unimaginable heights of achievement in life.

Vaastu & Hast Mudra

We can find various hast (hand) mudras (postures) in Indian classical dancing postures. Khajuraho, Ajanta and other ancient time figurines depict with fingers held in different hasta mudras promote healthy human aura resulting in all round success in life.

Hand and fingers when held in defined postures generate tremendous energy flow governed by five great elements. Thumb represents agni (fire), forefinger (index) represents vayu (air), middle finger represents akash (ether), ring finger represents prithvi (earth) and little finger represents apa or jal (water).

Discussed here are only the mudras related to creation of vaastu balance. For better result, these are practiced sitting cross-legged with fingers held gently together in defined posture for 5 to 40 minutes daily, by gradual increase in time devoted.

One most common mudra is Gyan Dhyan Mudra when the thumb and index fingers are brought together. This is depicted by great thinkers in meditative poses of Buddha, Mahavira, Christ, Guru Nanak and other great ones. Its practice ensures mental peace, concentration, memory and spirituality. It helps develop intuition as well. It can be practiced to remove affliction in northeast corner of your home, office or factory.

Surya Mudra is practiced when ring finger is placed at the base of the thumb and thumb is placed over the ring finger giving flow of special energy. It reduces obesity and tension and promotes body balance. This brings about the balance in the East part of the vaastu purush apart from given a robust body to the practitioner.

A balanced west of the vaastu purush can be obtained by practicing Varuna Mudra. Touch the tip of the little finger with the tip of the thumb while the other fingers are kept upright. Regular practice ensures an optimum level of water in the body and heals all water related ailments.

Apan Vayu Mudra or Hriday Mudra can be practiced for imbalance in the Brahmsthana and/or northwest corner. Fold the forefinger down and touch the mound of the thumb. The middle finger and ring fingers touching gently the thumb with the little finger held erect is prescribed for help in heart regulation as well as asthma and breathing problems.

Energisation of the entire vaastu purush, and especially, the creation of balance in northeast corner or direction can be brought about by Pran Mudra. The little and ring finger when placed on the thumb help improve your own vitality, eyesight. The other mudra for the same purpose of energising the vaastu purush in general is Prithvi Mudra i.e. join the ring finger and the thumb together.

South or southwest direction when afflicted in vaastu, Apan Mudra can be practiced.
The middle finger and the ring finger touching the tip of the thumb while the forefinger and the little finger are held upright. This even gives relief in urinary problems or discharge of waste matter from the body. Purification of vaastu purush and your body system is intensified by this.

Akash mudra is formed when the upper tip of the thumb is touched with the front portion of the middle fingle in Vajrasana removes affliction in the Brahmasthan and problems caused by wrong placement of columns and beams in the home, office and factory. Prithvi mudra is achieved by touching the thumb with the ring finger giving the almost the similar vaastu dosh removal effects.

Padmasana and Siddhasana are highly favourable for all above except prescribed otherwise. Special attention should to keep your spine and neck straight. Most necessarily, all other fingers than those joined should be held straight and the eyesight either set straight or half closed - as in meditation. Wishing you all a Happy New Year with great health to you, your family and the vaastu purush of your home, office and factory.

Vaastu & Tulsi Plant

Vaastu & Tulsi Plant

Indian basil or the holy Tulsi plant is an important symbol in the Indian tradition. It has great relevance in Vaastu remedial application. It is a venerated plant and the name itself means "the incomparable one. Though Tulsi grows wild in the tropics and warm regions, it is a delicate plant if not well attended and watered daily in accordance with the season. If it is grown or maintained in a pot, it should be watered morning and evening in summer. In winter it needs water in the morning only. Dark or Shyama tulsi and light or Rama tulsi are the two main varieties of basil, the former possessing greater medicinal value. Of the many varieties, the Krishna or Shyama tulsi is commonly used for worship. Karpoora tulsi gives us essential oil used for medicinal purposes, and is used in herbal soaps, also these days.

The presence of tulsi plant symbolizes the purity of thought, karma and body to the family members. Even without a vaastu dosa its presence itself is powerful enough to give good health to the mind, body and soul. It can be nurtured religiously either in the courtyard of the abode or in the northeast sector balcony or opening. One can have the tulsi planted in a specially built structure with images of deities on all four sides, and an alcove for a small earthen oil lamp to be lighted morning and evening. One can safely have up to a dozen tulsi plants on the verandah or in the garden or on either side of the pathway forming a "tulsi-vrindavan".

Tulsi is a prime herb in Ayurvedic treatment. It is considered the elixir of life as it promotes longevity. The extract of tulsi plant is used to prevent and cure many illnesses including malaria. It can be used to treat common ailments. These days many household drink tulsi tea also to promote health. The tulsi plant is even known to purify. It is used as a repellent to mosquitoes and other harmful insects.

In Hindu mythology, tulsi is very dear to Lord Vishnu. Tulsi is ceremonially married to Lord Vishnu annually on the 11th bright day of the month of Karttika of the lunar calendar (which will fall on October this year). This festival continues for five days and concludes on the full moon day, which falls in mid October. This ritual, called the 'Tulsi Vivaha' inaugurates the annual marriage season in India.

Varanasi boasts of Tulsi Manas Mandir where tulsi is overgrown and worshipped along with other gods and goddesses. According to one belief Lord Vishnu is pleased when tulsi is worshipped. Some wear beaded necklaces made of tulsi stems.

Vaastu & Northeast

Vaastu - Northeast

Peace at Home & Quality Product at Factory

Vaastuwise, northeast is the most auspicious area of a property, being the confluence of solar energy and the geomagnetic energy, which is divine merging of heavenly energies, percolating from the top of planet earth.  An auspicious northeast brings peace and tranquillity in a home and enables quality product in a manufacturing unit.

The pranic flow of vaastu energy is from north-east to south-west forming a delicate axis passing through Brahmsthan. On this axis all the body energy charkas are located. Anyone who penetrates or harms this axis by inauspicious structures (column or stair block) is sure to face dire consequences. On the north-eastern flank of a property (home, factory, office, farm house, etc.), presence of a toilet and kitchen are taboo. While north-east promotes learning, good luck, optimism, and godly blessings; on the physical plane, it represents pancreas, crown chakra and third eye.

Vaastu Dosh (afflictions) can be of various types and so are the remedies thereof, which when applied in festival times or in increasing moon are more effective.

The remedies can be divided into two parts. Here is a guide to some of the basic principles for removal or weakening of vaastu dosha and the remedies for general well-being. These include: a) Removal of vaastu dosha; b) Relocating the wrongly placed elements, like – water and fire; c) Placement of counterbalancing enhancers or blockers; d) Environmental checks and balances by plants and trees.

Vaastu dosha weakening can also be by spiritual means, such as -
·         By placement of deities and or yantras;
·         By planetary gems or colours, and so on;
·         By vaastu purush chakra clearing and energizing;
·         By appeasing relevant gods - vaastu devata;
·         By clearing environment by herbals placement;
·         By recitation of mantras (jap).

If vaastu dosh removal is by demolition and reconstruction, prayers to Vaastu Purush should be performed first of all. Also after start of demolition no items of use can be taken away from the site of demolition, except for disposal.

Vaastu & Apartment Living

Divine Vaastu : Apartment Living

For harmonic living of the occupant, a multi-storey complex should be vaastu friendly. The towers with greater height or more number of floors are placed in the south west and the ones with lower height and fewer number of floors in north east or east. Vaastu enjoins reducing floor heights in all multi-storey buildings. The minimum differential recommended is reduction by one-twelfth part of the lower floor height and each subsequent floors upward. It is required that the entry to the complex be from the exalted zones of desired direction, preferably from north or east.

Compliance to vaastu regulations is utterly difficult in apartments and flat systems. However, one can base the selection in conformity with Vaastu principles based on solar and geomagnetic energy. Making a conscious effort to own a flat in the northeast sector of a multi-storey tower may help to begin with. Still better the tower chosen is the one which is located in the northeast or north or east. The other apartment towers should not shadow the stated directions, in the early morning hours.

While the master bedroom can be located in the southwest, the kitchen may be located in the southeast or alternatively in the northwest. Most importantly, the bedroom located in the southwest may be used as a master bedroom or be given to the elders of the family to enhance the auspiciousness of the apartment.

Efforts should be made to select an apartment in the higher floors of the towers, in particular if the complex is located at a level below the road or street in immediate proximity. Balcony may be preferred in the East or North East or North. Also, these stated balcony or balconies should not be shadowed in the early hours of the morning. It is better to ensure that the entry of the apartment is not from a dark corridor.

Preference should be given to a complex having roads and approaches from North and the East, or at least on the North or the East. West can also be acceptable, but a South road should have the main gate as closer to the eastern end. The complex should have at least the southwest corner as right angle. Northeast corner being an acute angle is auspicious. Acute angle corners in other directions are not recommended. Main entrance should better not have obstructions such as water tank, electric pole or transformer or a tree or septic tank and so on.

The complex should be enclosed of open space more on the north or east and least towards the south. Gradient slope should be towards northeast, north or east, and never towards south, west, or southwest. Rainwater harvesting pit and underground tank should better be located in the northeast part of the complex to bring about harmony and prosperity to the occupants. The overhead tank structure should better be located in the west of southwest part of the complex.

Judicious selection of an apartment is the one in which the common staircase and elevator block is located on the south or west or southwest of the apartment. The rooms and enclosed spaces inside a flat should better be four cornered – each 90 degree angled. “C” shaped towers are better than “L” shaped ones. As far as possible, main entrance may be in the exalted zone of the related direction.

The cooperative housing societies may prefer to have thicker and higher compound walls on the south or west of the complex and also make best efforts to isolate the inauspicious corners or irregular nature of the plot of “veedhi sula” wherever present. While the proper cross ventilation is ensured, doors and windows should preferably be larger on the northern or eastern flanks, and those be smaller on the southern and western flanks.

Most importantly in an apartment, a beneficial location for a kitchen is Southeast corner. The oven should be placed in the East of Southeast enabling the housewife to face East while cooking. Alternatively, kitchen can be located in the West of Northwest, or in the West as a last option it is okay to have the kitchen in the South. In all cases, cooking platform should be in the Southeast corner of the kitchen, enabling the cook to face East as far as possible. The sink in the kitchen should be in the Northeast corner of the kitchen or closer to it either in the north or east. Avoid kitchen in the Northeast as it would bring economic losses. The kitchen should have a large window in the East. However, the placement of gas stove should not have a window behind it.

Preferably, the drawing room must have larger windows in the North and East. It is important to have a window in the East of the study room. As for bedrooms, ensure that windows or openings should not be in the South and if they are unavoidable, they should be smaller in size and fewer in number. Alternatively, these openings can be kept closed most part of the day. Living room in the flat is preferred in the Northeast, Northwest, East or Northern directions. All heavy furniture such as sofa, cots, diwan, tables should be arranged along the Southern or Western walls. Light furniture such as folding or fibre chairs or modas can be arranged along the Northern or Eastern directions. The Northeast corner of the living room should be kept vacant, better still to keep a live plant in the North or East zones. While duplex is not favoured in vaastu, the stairs going upward should be avoided in northwest and from the central part of the lower floor.

As to the toilets, it is most important that there is no toilet in the northeast zone of your apartment, more so on the eastern zone or end. Common toilet should be towards the Northwest of the living room or alternatively to the Southeast. And in case of bedrooms toilets are preferred in the Northwest corner. Toilets can also be located in the West or South sectors.
The taps in the toilet should be either in the East, North or Northeast. The mirrors on north or east wall should be preferred and can be big sized, otherwise, the mirror should be of smaller size on other walls i.e. west or south. The slope of the flooring of the toilet should facilitate flowing of water in the East, North or Northeast directions. The geyser in the toilet should be located in the Southeast corner or in the Northwest corner and lastly along the South or West walls respectively.

There should not be any room having lower level of flooring in the Southwest, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest. It is safer to have all the rooms in the even level, or preferable is the northeast part being lower. The dedicated pooja room in a flat can be located preferably in the Northeast zone. Alternatively, pooja room can be in the West or East of the study room or dining room.

The master bedroom in the flat should be in the Southwest corner. Avoid children’s bedroom in the Southwest which can promote disobedience in children. For male children, a room in the Northeast or in the West can be better and for female children a Northwest room is recommended.

The main entrance of a flat should be in directions namely north or east of the northeast section of the flat or east of the southeast section or west of northwest section or quadrant of the flat. It is also necessary that the flat should have openings and balconies on the northern or eastern side of the flat. The main door to the flat may better be of two shutters with full opening inside. A ventilator above the main door is preferred too. A rectangular design main door in teakwood is preferred. A threshold is also recommended in a main door entrance. It is also good to have a second door or an arch leading to the main flat. The doorway should always be cleared of footwear and may be stored along the south or western wall.

The subsequent doors should be smaller than the main door, while the exit or the service door should be the smallest. If the entry is from an inauspicious direction, keep the main door closed using a door closer and hand a mirror on the nearest eastern or northern wall.

Necessarily, avoid kitchen or a toilet or store in the northeast section of your flat. The burner should be designed in the southeast corner and water in northeast section of your kitchen. Fridge is best in west or northwest, while the utensils and shelf on the south or west walls.

Make sure that any facility including a dining table does not come under a beam. A square or rectangular dining table with a wooden top is preferred. It may be placed in eastern or northern or central part of the flat. A wash basin with a mirror near the dining is allowed only on northern or eastern wall.

Study or meditation is best facing east or north. If the prayer room is designed it should be so designed that the gods face the east or north direction and a mangal kalash filled with water is kept on the prayer platform in front of the deities. Arti lamp and Agarbatti increases the auspiciousness of the prayer room. Avoid placement of departed souls in the prayer platform. It is preferred that only limited number, preferably total odd number, should be placed on the platform allowing uncluttered viewing or darshan.

Do not despair if you already have an apartment not meeting the above vaastu requirements, as there are remedies available to weaken the negative impact of absence of positives and presence of negatives. Most potent in this respect are the plants, crystals and pyramids, specific colour wall clocks, paintings and decoratives.
